Nigerian Teachers and the Professional Code of Ethics for Teachers

On July 6, 2024, we hosted an insightful webinar titled “Nigerian Teachers and the Professional Code of Ethics for Teachers,” aimed at exploring the ethical responsibilities, challenges, and expectations of educators in Nigeria. The session featured two distinguished panelists: 

  • Dr. Amaka Amadi, Lecturer, Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education 
  • Mr. Obi Okechukwu, Assistant Secretary, Formidable Education Development 

The webinar attracted an impressive 278 participants, including educators, school administrators, and education enthusiasts, reflecting the importance of upholding ethical standards in Nigeria’s education sector. 

Key Highlights from the Webinar 

1. Understanding the Professional Code of Ethics for Teachers 

Dr. Amaka Amadi opened the discussion by outlining the core principles of the Nigerian Professional Code of Ethics for Teachers.  She highlighted that ethical teaching goes beyond subject delivery—it involves molding character, inspiring lifelong learning, and protecting students’ well-being. 

2. Ethical Challenges in the Teaching Profession 

Mr. Obi Okechukwu addressed common ethical challenges faced by teachers in Nigeria. He emphasized the importance of professional boundaries and the teacher’s duty to act as a role model, both within and outside the classroom. 

3. Upholding Ethical Standards in Nigerian Schools 

To address these challenges, the panelists recommended: 

  • Regular ethics training for teachers and school leaders 
  • Clear reporting channels for ethical violations 
  • Strong mentorship programs to guide early-career educators 
  • Collaboration with parents and communities to reinforce ethical standards 

Both speakers stressed that ethical teaching practices contribute to better learning outcomes, foster trust between teachers and students, and strengthen the overall education system.

The Q&A session allowed participants to engage directly with the panelists, raising critical questions such. The panelists emphasized that adhering to ethical guidelines not only protects students but also enhances teachers’ credibility and job satisfaction.
