Nigerian Bankers and the Code of Professional Ethics for Bankers

On May 27, 2024, we hosted an enlightening webinar on “Nigerian Bankers and the Code of Professional Ethics for Bankers,” aimed at discussing the ethical principles guiding the banking profession in Nigeria. The session featured Chris Nnakwe, an experienced banker, who shared valuable insights into the responsibilities, challenges, and expectations for banking professionals. The event attracted 138 participants, reflecting the importance of ethical standards in maintaining trust and accountability within the banking sector. 

Key Highlights from the Webinar 

1. Understanding the Code of Professional Ethics for Bankers 

Chris Nnakwe opened the session by outlining the core principles that form the foundation of ethical banking practices.  Nnakwe emphasized that ethical banking is crucial for sustaining trust between financial institutions and the communities they serve. 

2. Ethical Challenges in Nigerian Banking 

The discussion also explored common ethical dilemmas faced by bankers in Nigeria. Nnakwe stressed that adhering to the professional code helps protect both bankers and customers while ensuring the stability of the financial system.

To address these challenges, Nnakwe recommended: 

  • Regular ethics training for banking professionals. 
  • Strong internal controls to prevent unethical practices. 
  • Whistleblower protections to encourage reporting of misconduct. 
  • Transparent communication with customers regarding fees, risks, and benefits. 

He also highlighted the role of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) in promoting ethical standards and holding members accountable.

The Q&A session allowed participants to engage directly with Chris Nnakwe, raising important questions. Nnakwe emphasized the importance of ethical leadership within banks and customer awareness to promote accountability.
