Nigerian Teachers and the Professional Code of Ethics for Teachers

Objective: 

  1. To address the need for ethical conduct among teachers  
  1. To educate the public about the code of ethics guiding teaching professionals 
  1. To provide the public with practical solutions on how to address issues of misconduct by erring teachers    

Activities: 

  1. Interactive session with panelist 
  1. Questions and answer session involving the audience  

Key findings and results: 

  1. The teachers are aware that there are some of their colleagues who violates the code of ethics guiding the teaching profession.  
  1. There is a task force constituted by Formidable Education Development to monitor and discipline defaulting teachers.   
  1. While corporal punishment is not allowed, some teachers still use it to enforce rules.  
  1. There is the need to further train teachers on ethically approved discipline for disobedient students. 

Lesson learned: 

Parents have a role to play in finding out from their children the conduct and attitude of their teachers and report complaints to the school authority. Ethics organizations have a responsibility of educating teachers on the code of Ethics guiding the teaching profession.
